Chris Ray, owner of the sale barn, is the youngest son of Bobby and Sue Ray. He was raised in Palmersville, Tennessee on the family farm along with his three older brothers, in a family that always had horses and ponies. Chris and his brothers’ trail rode for pleasure. A favorite pastime of the Ray family was to attend horse auctions and pony pulls on the weekends.
Chris moved to Illinois in 1992. He worked for Bob and Jean Shoemaker at Lake of Egypt Ranch, buying, selling and trading horses for Bob. He attended horse auctions in many states, buying and selling horses for the Shoemakers. The Shoemakers bought the IPLA barn in Goreville, Illinois in 1996 and started the Southern Illinois Equine Sale. Early on Chris bought the barn from the Shoemakers. He acquired the business at age 25 and expanded the facility by adding an office area, restaurant, rest room, extra pen spaces and an outdoor riding arena.
Horse auctions continue today with special registered sales in February, April, August and October. Chris has also expanded the business by adding cattle auctions, goat and sheep auctions, farm auctions and dealer tack sales.
Chris and his family have successfully owned and operated the business for over 20 years.
